A Holiday in Hungry Horse, Montana

"We're just a bunch of rednecks having fun," said a man in a tie-dye t-shirt. I could tell he was trying to make me feel comfortable. The next thing I knew he was heaping BBQ onto a paper plate for me, free of charge. I sat down at a table of locals, Canyon Critters, as they are sometimes affectionately (or not so much) called. Around the table men and women disparaged their community for "wasting their low income on pointless fireworks," while clearly enjoying the debauchery at the same time. As the night went on I was surprised that many of the most reckless pyrotechnics came from people clearly not from the area, many seemed to have driven down from Alberta...
